How tile estimating works

Tile quantities depend on three things: the area, the footprint of each tile including its grout joint, and the waste allowance for your layout. A straight grid wastes the least, offset (brick-bond) a little more, and diagonal and herringbone layouts create many angled cuts at the edges. Small rooms waste proportionally more because a larger share of tiles touch a wall.

Because tiles come in boxes and shade can vary between production batches, we always round up to whole boxes and recommend keeping a few spares for future repairs. Adhesive and grout are estimated separately on the bag — our tile calculator gives a starting figure for adhesive.
